JP Zardini from Belgium

From CNC Beginner to Confident Operator

In the heart of Belgium, model aircraft enthusiast JP Zardini was searching for a way to bring his craft to the next level. Specializing in the design and creation of large-scale airplane models, JP knew he needed more precision and production capability. While browsing YouTube, he came across a machining demo video by SmartLathe — and that’s where the journey began.

A Passion Turned Into Progress

Though JP had basic mechanical knowledge, he had never operated a CNC lathe before. His goal was simple yet ambitious: purchase his first CNC machine to produce both metal and plastic components for his model airplanes.

After reaching out to us with part drawings, our team walked him through machine selection and technical feasibility. He was torn between two of our bestsellers — the compact SL-36 and the more powerful SL-X.

Choosing the Right Machine for the Long Run

Initially, JP leaned toward the smaller SL-36, which would easily fit into his workshop. However, after evaluating his long-term plans and part complexity, he decided to go with the SL-X, thanks to its advanced mill-turn configuration — combining Y-axis 4+4 live tooling and a servo turret for true multi-process capability.

While the SL-X does take up more space than the SL-36, JP understood that for a machine with such powerful, integrated functions, the SL-X is actually extremely compact for its class. Its footprint is impressively tight compared to typical mill-turn machines with similar features — making it an efficient choice even for limited workspaces.

He was so committed to this decision that he even enlarged the entrance to his workshop to ensure a smooth installation.

Getting Started: From Zero Experience to First Successful Part

With no prior CNC experience, JP encountered the typical challenges — setup, programming, tooling, and daily operation. To help him get up to speed quickly and with confidence, we offered him our Sample Demo Package — a special support solution for first-time users.

  • At the SmartLathe factory, we used his part drawing to machine a complete sample, and provided him with the exact G-code program, tool setup, and cutting parameters — all configured and ready to use.

  • We also recommended purchasing our customized Post Processor for his CAM software, enabling him to generate accurate machine-ready code with one click. He took our advice — and it made programming much easier and safer.

These two steps removed all entry barriers and gave him a fast, hands-on way to succeed from day one.

First Impressions: A Workshop Full of Passion

A few months later, JP kindly shared a video tour of his workshop, showcasing not only the SL-X in action, but also the many model aircraft he was crafting. The SL-X was proudly placed in the largest room of his workspace, clearly the heart of his production.

In the video, JP expressed his strong satisfaction with SmartLathe’s after-sales support, highlighting how our team had been there for him with answers and advice during his initial learning curve.

Step-by-Step Process Support

As JP dove deeper into production, our team continued to assist him with every step of the workflow — tailored to his learning pace and part complexity:

  • ✅ Recommending the right cutting tools for metal and plastic

  • ✅ Assisting with toolpath and parameter setup in his CAM software

  • ✅ Helping him optimize cycle times and part quality

  • ✅ Providing remote support for machine setup, tool offsets, and test cuts

In the early days, JP contacted us for almost every new part he wanted to make. No matter how simple or advanced, we responded patiently and thoroughly every time, helping him build both skill and confidence.

Over time, JP became more independent. Today, he can handle most parts on his own, only reaching out to us for complex or high-tolerance jobs — a clear sign of his rapid progress.

One Year Later: Continued Trust and Satisfaction

On the one-year anniversary of using his SmartLathe SL-X, JP recorded a second video — this time reflecting on the full year of ownership.
In it, he praised:

  • The stability and reliability of the machine

  • The consistent machining results

  • Our responsive and professional after-sales service throughout the entire year

This follow-up video was a powerful affirmation of everything we stand for: long-term commitment, technical guidance, and genuine care.

From Hobby to Business Opportunity

Over the past year, JP has not only completed numerous high-quality components for his airplane models — he’s also started accepting outside machining work, quickly recovering his investment and turning his machine into a source of ongoing income.

Today, he is a capable operator, building parts with confidence — and knows we’re still here whenever he needs that extra bit of support.
